Meet the Maker | This & That Design co
Meet the makers behind This & That Design Co - Sydney and Marlene! This mother/daughter duo make the CUTEST travel and makeup bags. Each season they launch an expertly curated limited edition line of fun and colourful prints and patterns. We met Sydney at the Burlington Made spring show earlier this year!
We asked Sydney how they got started and what inspired This & That Design Co. and her response was “Seeing all the incredible makers in our community, wanting to be apart and never wanting to work for someone else.” Well if that doesn’t say “True maker Entrepreneur” - I don’t know what does!
Enjoy getting to know these guys with a little fun Q&A:
What is your field
Handmade Maker - Travel Accessories.
What's one thing people probably don't know about you?
I have 14 tattoos, I run on iced coffee and love to spoil my puppy.
What's one thing you couldn't live without?
Coffee is probably the most common answer, so I'll say my car because I probably spend more time in it than my bed.
What is your favourite date night activity?
Walking our pup with a coffee in hand at a cute spot.
What inspired you to start your business?
We love the handmade space and I've always wanted to be an entrepreneur, so we needed to figure out what we could do to get into this space and create something that people would love. Saw a friends makeup bag and couldn't believe how neglected it was and that was my lightbulb moment. My mom was always a great seamstress and we had a blast choosing fabrics my whole life for little projects, so we tried it out, got social media and that was just the beginning.
What advice can you give someone looking to start up their own business?
Find something you can stand behind. Something that you wont get bored of and choose an awesome partner to work with you. If you can do something better than what you've seen or something you haven't seen at markets/craft shows, etc then that's totally what you should be doing!
What sets your business apart from others alike?
A lot of our customers say our fabric choices and I'd like to agree. Also that our bags are lined with a water resistant lining, so they're machine washable.
What is the most challenging part of running your business?
Working from home. I don't know how to shut off.
What is the most rewarding part of running your business?
Having people come up to you at events/markets, etc and compliment the quality of our bags or our fabric choices. We also love the amazing customers we have and it's always the best when we get to meet them in person and find out what bags they've got from us over the years. It's always fun putting faces to orders or instagram friends.
Where is business located out of?
What is your favourite part of what you do?
Being able to work with my mom because she's my best friend and she's amazing at what she does.
This or that (Pun intended!)
Coffee or tea?
Neutral or colourful?
Morning or night?
Wine or beer?
Starbucks or Tim Hortons?
Online shopping or in store?
