January 2019 | Month in Review

To hold myself accountable this year and to reflect on the months that pass — I’ve decided to create a Bullet Journal spread to visualize what we did.

We thought that January would be a slow month. A month of learning and setting in new processes like learning how to use HoneyBook. Total disclaimer — this is a referral link that will get you 50% off — that’s $200 in savings! I would not be sharing this if I didn’t like it. Truth is, I absolutely LOVE it. It has been a total game changer in our business. From proposal, to invoice, contract, and right over to payment. It’s a smooth and simply process that let’s your client’s pay you faster and easier.

Puppy!

Over the Christmas holidays, we made the decision to adopt a dog. We had been wanting a dog for awhile but our lifestyle, working full time for someone else, and living in a condo. We did some research and landed on a bread that would be good with our current living situation, small in size, friendly and cuddly. We found our little Winnie through a post on Kijiji and fell in love with him. We drove out to Tiny, Ontario to see him at the breeder. Winnie is a miniature longhaired dachshund. He was even sweeter in person. Oh my goodness. Our hears just melted. The breeder told us that another family was coming by to see him and that they would ultimately decide who would have the last pup in the litter. Ok — so this was basically the hardest part ever. We basically fell in love with him and had to put our hopes down incase we didn’t get picked. We kept really optimistic and it was hard to contain our excitement. We finally got the call that we were chosen. YAY! Winnie has been the best little coworker. He has such a personality, he’s super friendly with other dogs, people and babies (him and Ollie are besties). If you don’t have a dog in your life - you need one.

Wed well Showcase

So if getting a puppy wasn’t enough, we did our first ever wedding showcase with Wed Well at the Oakville Convention Centre. We had been planning this for months and signed up last August. My sister and my mom took turns puppy sitting at our place that day while we were at the show. The turnout was unbelievable and the connections were intimate and authentic. We were blown away by the response and weren’t expecting to be as busy as we were. We made so many connections that day and met the sweetest brides and couples. Krista from KJ & Co did a fabulous job planning the whole event. To all those beautiful souls that came out — a sincere thank you. We truly enjoyed talking and getting to know each and every one of yous! xo

Via Calligraphy Round Table Chats

Another thing that I purchased my ticket way in advance! Sylvia from Via Calligraphy put together a round table (it wasn’t actually a round table :) ) event which was open to anyone who was looking to start a small business, or side hustle, or strategically grow an authentic following. It was an intimate group of other like minded ladies. We all came in with questions and all left feeling inspired and gained so much.

honeybook

Ok — I know I chatted about this earlier. At the end of last year when I took the leap into full time — I was looking to streamline my processes and needed a CRM like HoneyBook. I was using Wave App for invoicing, then I had my email (which BTW gives me so much anxiety!), Instagram, Facebook, Etsy, and our own website. We were all over the map! I was finding I was wasting too much time going back and trying to find that specific message, or detail from a client. It was leaving holes and there was room for error. I need to streamline my business to help me while I was wearing all the hats. As a small business owner, we are often times a one man (or woman) show. I was debating between HoneyBook, Dubsaudo, and 17Hats. What appealed to be about HoneyBook was that the look and layout was “prettier” and that I could really brand it and make it our own. Anndddd… Of course they had a sale on for 50% off ($200 off) — which disclaimer, you can get on that HoneyBook train for 50% off too by using our referral code link: Get HoneyBook. Sooo I was obviously in. Within the first week — I had invoiced several clients and had their contracts signed off and deposits paid. The program paid for it’s self in less then a week. I’m totally loving it and you should give it a try too. If your not satisfied you can always cancel within a window for full money back guarantee.

The self made life podcast

Last fall my friend Sydney from This & That Design Co approached myself and Megan from Megan Butchard Photography about starting a podcast. Truthfully this is totally out of my comfort zone and I hate the sound of my own voice (news flash - everyone prob does). I did some audio editing when I was in design school and working in design for video and motion design work so I felt like I could offer those skills. The Self Made Life is a podcast is for entrepreneurs by entrepreneurs and our goal is to be conversational about business and creative topics that are helpful and relevant. When Tayne and I started this business — we had no clue what we were doing (heck we still don’t!). We want to help shed some light on those grey areas and help small businesses and creative build their own empires. We started recording, batch editing, had a photoshoot with the talented Ariana del Mundo, and officially launched the podcast on January 31st! It has been so exciting seeing so many listeners already tuning in and enjoying the first couple episodes. We have a stellar line up of guests that were so excited to have on the show! Tune in on Spotify, Google Play, Stitcher and (soon) iTunes!

Ariana del Mundo

Ariana was the first photographer I had in mind to come along side us to shoot ya for our Self Made Life photoshoot. She also just so happens to be our photographer for our wedding coming up in May! I met Ariana through the Rising Tide Society’s follow Friday train and fell in love with her work. Since meeting via the internet, her and her husband Alex have shot us for our engagement photos and we’ve also had the pleasure to work together on some styles shoots! Ariana has become a dear friend and I am so grateful for our friendship. I cannot wait for her and Alex to photograph our big day!

Brush Lettering Workshop

This month I taught our Introduction to Brush Lettering Workshop at a new space called Medium Art Studio in Burlington. Medium Art Studio is a pottery and sewing studio and is run Lindsey and her mom. I am so glad I stumbled upon this space — it’s the perfect spot and set up for a workshop and the space is gorgeous! I led a group of 18 ladies through this introductory calligraphy workshop. I always start my workshops by having my students write their names in a “before” section. By the end of the class — I get them to rewrite their names beside the first one. After learning the basics, proper positioning, posture, and a deconstructed alphabet throughout the 2 hour session, it was seriously so amazing to see everyones progress!

Couldn’t make it January’s workshop? We’re teaching an Introduction to Modern Calligraphy Workshop (pointed pen!) at Medium Art Studio on Sunday February 24th from 1:30pm - 4pm. Get your tickets here: Get My Tickets! — There are currently a few spots left!

Or… Be the first to know about upcoming workshops! Sign up for our Workshop newsletter (we promise — we wont spam you).
